Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) technologies have been extensively researched for decades with the broad objectives of improving the ease of diagnostic via point-of-care (POC) testing and reducing the impact of the rising cost of healthcare by minimizing sample volumes. A key enabling feature for the vast majority of these LOC platforms is the ability to isolate a particular analyte from a heterogeneous sample. While on-chip separation of micron-scale particles, such as human parasites, eukaryotic cells, blood cells, and circulating tumor cells, have already been efficiently demonstrated using deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) pillar arrays, translation of this technology to the true nanoscale has remained elusive, where it can be utilized to sort bio-colloids such as exosomes.
