The use of spatial (or 3D) audio gives the user the perception of hearing sounds in specific spatial locations. 3D sound can be used to convey positional information in various types of systems. Realistic 3D sound is achieved by using head-related transfer functions (HRTFs), which model the acoustic transformation that a sound undergoes as it impinges the human body and is perceived by the auditory system. HRTFs are individualistic to each person, due to variations in anthropometric features. Customizing HRTFs to provide a suitable fit for users remains a challenge in this line of research. This talk will address the SoundPAD Lab's solutions to this problem.
