Letter from the Chair

October 12, 2020

Dear colleagues,

Much has changed since you received last year's Duke ECE magazine. We have all struggled this year, but we have adapted—as engineers will do—and created innovative new approaches to education and research that have enabled us to keep moving toward our ambitious goals.

Here at Duke ECE we are eagerly looking forward to the launch of the new Duke Quantum Center (DQC) when it opens its doors in the spring. The DQC's Scalable Quantum Computing Laboratory, or SQLab, will be the first of its kind and unique in all the world, offering its users customized quantum computers to help solve incredibly complex optimization problems.

You can learn much more about the DQC and our expanding quantum team in this year's digital magazine. You can also read about new research in metamaterials, machine learning and secure computing, our new Minor in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, and the recent accomplishments of our dogged, talented students and brilliant faculty.

Wishing you a safe and happy fall,
