    • English for International Students (EIS) courses (EGR 505, 506, 705, 706) do not count toward the 30 total units required for the MS degree. 
    • Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA to remain in good standing and to graduate. 
    • Course selection is formally approved by submitting a Program of Study form. 
    • MS students (except Duke 4+1) are required to take at least three full-time semesters to graduate.

  • Duke offers both a Master of Science and a Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

  • Study tracks act as guided pathways that help you select courses aligned with your technical and career goals. They provide structure for your learning journey while offering enough flexibility to let you explore related subfields, such as AI and quantum computing. We also support you in selecting the right track based on your interests.

  • Yes. This will allow you to be best prepared for industry or academia. However, besides taking track requirements, students have flexibility to choose courses from other ECE tracks, other engineering departments, and even from a wide variety of STEM fields.

  • You can choose from five tracks: Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Computer Hardware Engineering, Quantum Software & Hardware and Semiconductor Technology. Tracks are flexible so that you can explore different disciplines. Whether you’re interested in a master’s in AI or you hope to design the next generation of hardware platforms that keep the world moving, you can build it here

  • Absolutely! We aim to equip our students with future-proof skills that will be relevant for years to come. With that in mind, our program includes several different specialization tracks, including one in machine learning and AI. This is a strong option if you plan to work in AI engineering, data science, autonomy or intelligent systems development

  • You can build a customized path that includes courses related to hardware design, systems programming, embedded engineering and applied software development. Such a program will be similar to earning a master’s in software engineering, but with stronger ECE depth.

  • No. You will earn either an MEng or an M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Tracks simply help you build a defined academic and professional focus to support a more successful transition into your chosen career path.

  • In general, the required coursework (10 courses for each program) can be completed in three full-time semesters, and some students make this choice. However, most of our students finish in four semesters, with a part-time final semester.

  • GRE scores are optional.

    International students must take an English proficiency test (Duolingo is preferred) unless they have studied for at least two of their undergraduate years in a program conducted in English and located in a country that has English as a principle language.

  • Students who have done extremely well in a course can be an assistant for that class in the future. Students can also be hired by faculty as research assistants. Students are more likely to hold a TA or RA position during their second year.

  • MS applicants should contact grad-applications@duke.edu, and MEng applicants should contact pratt_masters@duke.edu.

  • In the 2024 cohort, employers included Amazon, NVIDIA, Google, Samsung Electronics America, Salesforce, SpaceX and many more. Alumni found work as Software Engineer, AI Algorithm Engineer, Data Science Engineer, AI Web Developer, Lead Solution Engineer and additional roles. The average base salary was $113,500 across all industries.

  • Yes, both programs allow (and encourage!) you to participate in an internship if you choose to.
