SUMMARY:Athena Seminar Series: Embodied AI at the Edge: Embedded Sensing and Mobile Agents for Next-Generation Intelligent Environments
DESCRIPTION:We have witnessed an explosion in the capabilities of foundation models and artificial intelligence to reason and generate content in the digital domain. Despite these advancements\, there still exists a fundamental disconnect between their intelligence and our everyday physical environments. To bridge this gap and create truly ubiquitous intelligent environments that are capable of supporting everything from smart living for aging populations to autonomous urban management\, we need to design and deploy adaptable\, context-aware AI on the edge that can perceive\, act\, and operate robustly in complex physical environments. Towards this vision\, I will present several lines of work that 1) exploit the physical interaction between robotic agents and their environment to perform autonomous\, sensorless mapping of 3D airflow fields using only the flight dynamics of low-cost micro-drones\, 2) democratize the deployment of adaptable edge sensing through a modular\, plug-and-play IoT sensing system that enables the rapid\, accessible integration of customized hardware for AI-driven applications\, and 3) demonstrate how interfacing modern foundation models with a reconfigurable drone enables embodied agents to autonomously perceive\, understand\, and adapt to diverse physical tasks.

SUMMARY:Understanding Medical Record Data with the Duke FCAP System: Introduction and Hands-on Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, participants will learn about the structure and organization of medical record data\, and use the Duke FCAP system to query data and gain hands-on experience with the platform.\nThe Duke Federated Clinical Analytics Platform (FCAP) is a secure and protected environment allowing access to de-identified medical record data.\nThe seminar will be at an introductory level with foundational concepts around how patient medical record data are structured. Participants will also engage with hands-on exercises to construct FCAP queries for insights using medical record data.\nThis event is hosted by North Carolina Central University (NCCU)\, the Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)\, the Duke-NCCU Bridge Office\, and the Duke AI Health Community of Practice. Light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:ECE Distinguished Speaker Series: Tsu-Jae Liu\, "Engineering Leadership in a World of Accelerating Change"
DESCRIPTION:Engineering bridges science and technology\, driving innovation for the benefit of people and society. Today we live in an increasingly technology-dependent world shaped by engineers – and the pace of change is increasing exponentially. This calls for a reexamination of how we educate and empower engineers to advance technology for the long-term welfare of humanity and the planet. In this talk I will share ideas for transforming engineering education\, taken from relevant publications of the National Academies\, and discuss ways the National Academy of Engineering can promote coordination and foster collaboration to build an engineering workforce that is fit to shape a brighter future for all. \nBio: \nTsu-Jae King Liu is President of the National Academy of Engineering as of July 1\, 2025. A distinguished engineer and academic leader\, she earned her B.S.\, M.S.\, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. She joined the faculty of the University of California\, Berkeley in 1996\, and served as Dean of the College of Engineering from 2018-2024.\nLiu is renowned for her research in microelectronics and for co-developing the FinFET transistor\, now used in all leading-edge computer chips and smartphones. She has authored over 550 publications and holds 97 U.S. patents. Her recognitions include the DARPA Significant Technical Achievement Award and the IEEE Electron Devices Society Education Award.\nShe is a Fellow of the IEEE and the National Academy of Inventors\, and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Liu serves on the Boards of Directors for Intel Corporation and MaxLinear Inc.\, and has contributed nationally through leadership in microelectronics workforce development and service to advisory boards for NSF\, NIST\, and the White House PCAST.

SUMMARY:2026 Gene Golub SIAM Summer School on Fault-Tolerant Algorithms in Quantum Computing
DESCRIPTION:Quantum computing stands at the forefront of scientific innovation\, captivating broad interest as a dynamically evolving field. Recent years have witnessed remarkable progress in developing and analyzing quantum algorithms for a wide range of scientific computing challenges. These applications include various numerical linear algebra tasks\, solving high-dimensional differential equations\, learning from quantum systems\, and more.\nIn this summer school\, we will introduce quantum algorithms and quantum computing from a numerical analysis and applied mathematics perspective. We will first go over fundamental principles and basics of quantum mechanics and quantum computing\, introduce contemporary and essential techniques for constructing fault-tolerant quantum algorithms\, and then delve into quantum algorithms of various tasks for scientific computing purposes\, including quantum dynamics simulation\, numerical linear algebra tasks\, numerical differential equation\, and quantum learning tasks. No prior background in quantum physics or quantum computing is assumed.\nThe summer school will be held in person at Duke University\, Durham\, North Carolina\, from July 27 to August 7\, 2026. Graduate and advanced undergraduate students with strong interests in applied mathematics\, scientific computing\, or quantum information are especially encouraged to apply. The summer school plans to provide travel and local expense support for all attendees.\nWebpage: https://sites.duke.edu/siamss2026/\nApplication Deadline: March 1st 2026.
